British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, located using surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several access tunnels down to the site... early reports suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their bravery," he commented. "Including them were numerous British troops stationed over the festive period. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, following an assault killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
