The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
