Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US monetary authority cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, including the number of employment gains created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
