Sam Fender was awarded the Mercury Prize in October in Newcastle

The artist has given the full amount of his £25k Mercury Prize prize money to the Music Venues Trust, which operates to save the Britain's small concert spaces.

Fender was awarded the prize on mid-October as his new release the album was named the best record of the previous year.

The musician has chosen to hand the money over to the MVT, in acknowledgment of the vital role small stages played in his early career.

"I wouldn't be doing this success if it hadn't been for all the shows I played around the region, and further afield, when I was starting out," said the artist. "These spaces are legendary, but they are in difficulty."

Since the start of 2023, more than 150 of these locations have shut down – about 16 percent of the total UK scene.

Over the past year, top acts including Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Sheeran have all aided the trust in its attempts to help venues survive, by applying a small levy to their ticket prices, which goes to help independent venues.

Fender also participated, raising in excess of £100,000 on his 2024 arena tour to support numerous small stages across Britain.

The donation supported locations that were confronting imminent closure due to challenges arising from water damage, blazes and personal losses, as well as permit problems, legal disputes and neighbor objections.

Other venues were granted monetary aid in improving infrastructure and technical equipment that helped performers and fans.

"The idea that funds from concerts in big venues supports the local stages, where it kicks off for performers like me, is just sensible," the star has said.

The musician is not the first artist to contribute his Mercury Prize prize money to good deeds.

When Pulp received the trophy in the mid-90s for their release their work, frontman the singer declared that the band would donate their prize money to the charity War Child.

During 2002, rapper and singer the artist shared her bounty across several organizations, like the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell organization.

"And I contributed a thousand pounds to my local community centre, to their gymnastics class, because I did gymnastics when I was a child and they lacked better apparatus," Ms Dynamite explained to outlets.

In recent years, the band contributed their prize money to the community center that developed their group, as well as other independent music bodies.

Also the 1994 recipients the group donated their winnings to a charity for MS after a acquaintance was found to have the illness.

"Receiving the award was sufficient," remarked artist the singer. "The prize was the cherry on top but we didn't need the cherry, because we had the honor. So our victory impacted another person's life."

Last week, the Music Venues Trust announced it had rescued a couple of local spots in that region, by placing them under public stewardship.

The first in Southampton and the other in the city were bought under the community ownership program, which is backed by a national body and supporters who acquire "stakes" in the venues.
