Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the ability to question specific rulings made by the official, mirroring the system currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development follows just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
